Start Healthy With Head Start

Head Start collaborates with families to ensure that their children receive comprehensive physical and dental examinations annually. Parents are given support in establishing an ongoing and continuous source of medical and dental care with a health provider within the community. They are encouraged to become advocates for their child's health and safety.

We are pleased to have recently opened a dental clinic at our Jefferson Street location. We have a dentist on-site monthly to complete examinations and treatment. We also partner with the Coastal Family Mobile Unit ( "a doctor's office on wheels") which visits one of our sites twice monthly to provide health services to our families and the community. Both health providers accept Medicaid, SCHIP, health and dental insurance coverage.

Monthly parent meetings include topics relating to health and nutrition, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, transportation safety and cultural diversity.

Dental Clinic

The Head Start Dental Clinic is located at the JCCAC central office. The clinic was established to give our Head Start families and the community access to comprehensive and affordable dental health care and provide care for those without a permanent dentist. The Clinic serves children age 18 and under. The Dental Clinic is fully equipped to provide exams, X-rays, cleaning, fillings, pulps, crowns, extractions and many other dental services. Our Head Start families and community are welcome to contact us to make appointments at (228) 471-1254.

A dental exam is a requirement mandated by the Head Start Performance Standards. They must be completed within the initial 90 days of the child's entry into the program. The Dental Clinic is a convenient resource for the Head Start community as it also serves as a health education component. It also is an opportunity to assist parents in becoming more involved in what Head Start has to offer their families and community. An added convenience is the clinic's location at the Central Office, which lessens the concern of having to travel for a dental exam. We accept Medicaid, SCHIP and dental insurance.

Head Start provides a nutritious breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. All meals are low in fat, sodium and sugar and are prepared in a medley of ways for meal appeal and to compliment the diverse population within the program. Parents have input into meal planning by submitting meals; and when selected, the parent's name, center and classroom are included on the menu for "Banner Day".

Staff conduct nutrition activities with the children and distribute pamphlets during parent meetings to promote healthy eating habits, conversation and manners. Children with food allergies are accommodated with substitutions based upon their physician's recommendations.
